Santa Monica South Breaking Loose...

SMS Tower #27 at center of frame at approx. 11:30 a.m.
Dateline: Saturday, June 18, 2016...  A SSW Swell continues to strike south facing beaches of Southern California and SMS was no exception...  Set waves, inshore holes, rip currents, sketchy swimmers.....  Fortunately, SMS got a couple of #ZUMA legends to help out, namely, Capt. Dan Murphy and OLS/Paramedic, Steve Studivant!...

We arrived early at around 11:30 a.m. for our Noon - 8 pm shift at SMS Tower #27... took a run over to Tower #26 and fortunately had a camera on me...

Below, L2R, Capt. Dan Murphy and OLS/Paramedic Steve Sturdivant at Tower #26 at approximately 11:40 a.m.

Meanwhile, a surf contest was in progress on the south side of SMS Tower #28...

Below, on duty and on his deck at SMS Tower #28 is OL Jack Baghumian...

Just after saying hi to Jack he headed off toward Tower #29 to back up the guard there who was eyeing a swimmer in a rip current...

Below, the view from SMS Tower #27 just prior to 12 noon...

The Ginormous rip off of SMS Tower #26 at right of frame with the Baywatch rescue boat on patrol to the left thereof...  There were at least two blitz rescue situations at this reoccurring rip off of Tower #26 on this day... with both Dan Murphy and Steve Sturdivant hitting the water and making rescues multiple times, as well as OL Colin Goddard out of Tower #26 and a female OL out of Tower #25...

View of Tower #28 and OL Jack Baghumian.  Hats off to Jack who on at least four occasions insisted on swimming out on preventions and/or rescues instead of me.

Late afternoon and the beach patrons are still arriving...

After an extra hour on duty, OL Jack at Tower #28 closes up at 7:30 pm...

Still on duty at Tower #26 below is OLS/Paramedic, Steve Sturdivant...

Brutal, challenging day of surf, inshore holes, rips, rescues... I ended up with two rescues, numerous preventions, while some of the young guards either side of my tower were chalking up multiple rescues and running around like the 20 year olds they are.....  On one blitz rescue sequence off of SMS Tower #26 in the late afternoon, I think we had 6 lifeguards in the water assisting nearly a dozen people back to shore...  and as we brought the last victim into shore one young lifeguard shouted with enthusiasm, "Yeah SANTA MONICA!"...  I think he could have eaten a 38 oz steak by himself while running wet back to his tower without missing a beat!...  WhoYAH!...

And then 8 pm rolled around and the day was done... and we packed up and went home but before shutting the tower, I jumped in the ocean to cool off and get some of the 3 - 5 coats of sunscreen off... meanwhile the call car crew stood by at nearby shuttered Tower #26 and waited until I locked up and walked back to the parking lot...
