The June Tune That Just Was...

Dateline: Saturday, June 28, 2014

June Tune Hits All The Right Notes

By Adam Sandler

On Saturday, June 28, the beautiful Hermosa Beach 8th Street beach was the site of the annual "June Tune."

Past, present and future Surf Racing Competitors gathered to hone their ocean racing skills, share some laughs and otherwise enjoy a few hours of ocean fun. And with a water temp well over 70, what's not to like?

While there were no sightings of the baby Great Whites that have recently been calling the South Bay beaches home, there were plenty examples of great racing, with the surf boats providing the most drama during the pair of three lap dory races.

Other races included surf swim, paddle board, run swim run, surf ski, Ironman/Ironwoman and beach flags. The South Bay (U.S.) Marine Corp. recruits also took a run through the course. OohRah!

Sadly, the eagerly awaited Landline Relay was scrubbed at the last minute.

Mad Props should go to Charlotte Graham for organizing it, with an assist by Tom Seth and Dave Cartlidge.

And lest we forget to salute Bob Moore not only for his astute work officiating over the events (see pic; he's not warming up his shoulder muscles, he's helping to guide swimmers to the finish chute).

As if that wasn't enough, Bob also helped Dave park the surf boat for later pick up, when it was all over.

Well done, Bob!

Next up is the Ed Perry Regatta set for July 12 at Venice Beach.

Kerry O'Brien's Secret Underwater Malibu Lobster Cave!...

We know it's somewhere off the coast of Malibu.  Dan Atkins told us all about it, though when we've asked him numerous times to tell us "exactly" where it is he just smiles that Atkins smile...

And so yesterday we caught up with OL Kerry O'Brien at the recheck in Manhattan Beach and we asked him where his secret lobster cave was and he feigned any knowledge of such a place.  I again retold the basics of Dan's story about Kerry taking off his dive gear some 40 plus feet below the surface and crawling into a cave and a minute or more elapsed and Dan is getting really nervous about his dive partner... when suddenly Kerry emerges with a bug under each arm, a bug in each hand and one in between his legs... and his eyes say give me some air Dan!!!  Dan was ready and Kerry took some breaths and then they finished up their dive trip and had lobster for dinner and lunch and breakfast for the next week!...

It really could be anywhere and we have no idea where that could be...

Paradise Cove?!...

The Malibu Pier?!...

Or is it north of Trancas?!...

We even stopped at Zuma one morning and asked Veteran OL Tom Doman and he just smiled and didn't have anything to say about Kerry's lobster cave!...

So where exactly is this Secret Malibu Underwater Lobster Cave?!...  We still don't know.  Cal Porter probably knows where it is but he ain't talking!  Burnside can probably map it for us but his lips are sealed. Some Zuma Lifeguard Blood Oath or Diver's Law...

Maybe we can get Jake to tell us... when he finishes up another 18 holes at the Malibu Country Club...

p.s.s.  Tan Don't Burn... this is from the hour outside on the sand during the recheck...
