Three members of the International Life Saving Federation Medical Committee and a cohort have authored a definitive article on drowning just published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. I encourage you to read and share this article. It covers drowning from the initial onset to emergency room and hospital treatment. It would be worth sharing with your fellow lifeguards, chapters, agencies, and your local EMS system."

Excerpts include:

"Drowning is a leading cause of death worldwide among boys 5 to 14 years of age.  In the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death among children 1 to 4 years of age, ..."

"According to the new definition adopted by the WHO in 2002, “Drowning is the process of experiencing respiratory impairment from submersion/immersion in liquid.”

"Every drowning signals the failure of the most effective intervention — namely, prevention."

Until next time.....
