Dateline:  Saturday, March 29, 2014 at approx. 1700 hrs...
Location:  Venice Breakwater, Venice Beach, Calif.

The Spectacle and the Circus that is Venice Beach was fully on display in the late afternoon just past 5 pm this past Saturday when the LAPD chased a suspect across the beach and into the ocean at the Venice Breakwater.  With an LAPD Helicopter circling above, hundreds of beach patrons hurried across the beach, as well as many people from the nearby Venice Boardwalk, to catch a glimpse at the action!  And it was Exciting, Riveting and Entertaining, to be sure!

We've scoured the internet and found 3 great videos from a local merchant, Vivianne Robinson, of "NameOnRice.com" who captured the event with her video camera.

We also received permission from Vivianne Robinson to post the following two screen shots from one of her videos above which shows our Lifeguards in action during the rescue of the suspect after he had tried to avoid capture by fleeing into the ocean.

We were also observing, long distance, from the Venice Pier, and were able to capture some of the action, as follows:

LAPD IN THE SADDLE: THE VIDEO

LAPD Helicopter circling over breakwater...

We are hoping that the media will pick up on this story so that the personnel involved can provide us with some first hand commentary.

From the videos we were able to determine that two of our lifeguards were sent out on their paddleboards to rescue the suspect, which they did heroically and then turned him over to the waiting LACo Sheriff's who were standing by just outside the breakwater on the Sheriff's rescue boat.  The suspect was handcuffed by the Sheriff Deputy and the lifeguards returned to shore.

We hope to be able to supplement this blog post with some links to other videos and stories online.
Please stay tuned...

Just in from Alex with Venice311.org regarding some of the background of this story re the suspect and LAPD: "Here is the short, and as usual.... strange story of what happened.

LAPD officers had stopped some folks for smoking on the beach and were issuing citations for the violation when a nearby man with a soccer ball was lingering around... and subsequently kicked the soccer ball so it hit one of the people getting a ticket in the head. It seemed intentional, and it was also possibly meant for the officers. LAPD told the man to stop so they could talk to him and he took off running. They pursued the man and he continued to ignore commands to stop and to completely evade police he ran into the ocean. Lifeguards came with their boat and sheriffs were right behind and took the man into custody for LAPD. He was arrested and held at the Sheriffs station until LAPD came, picked him up and booked him at Pacific Division station."
