2013 USLA Nationals, Day #2: Photo Gallery

Dateline: Friday, August 9, 2013.  Day #2 is now also in the books and what a day it was.  Spectacular performances all around from Chapters all over the U.S.  Beach Flags were amazing!
Surf Boat Races, Surf Swim, the Paddleboard...

Here are the photos we took.  Enjoy!

Race Announcer, Rob McGowan, waves to us in the morning after we call out his name

Next up was the surf swim final for the age group of men, 40 - 49... only problem was that
at least 2/3rds of them cut the first buoy... leading to controversy... which led to the Final
having to be repeated...  True Story!

The finish of the 40 - 49 men's surf swim... which so many of whom skipped the first buoy...

And here are a couple of photos of a meeting with the Official to discuss the controversy...

Meanwhile, here are some of the early finishers in the 60 + age group surf swim final

Kenny Atkins and Amanda Atkins!

And then the 40 - 49 year old dudes got ready and did their "Final" Surf Swim do-over!...

LACo OL, Jerry Lopopolo, finishing the re-do age group surf swim with a Big Smile on his face... He caught a reallllly nice wave that he styled down the face of in front of the crowd and passing a couple of other competitors!  He was almost as stoked as we were!

Jerry Lopopolo still enjoying that free wave ride into shore!  Mad skills by this LACo OL!  Congratulations, Jerry!

Pro Photographer, Skip Prosser, below in the blue long sleeve t-shirt, always get the great shot!

Next, another semi-final heat of the men's open surf swim race...

Oh, look who's first?!...  LACo OL, Chad Carvin, of course

"Boca" Shout Out!...

Bob Burnside, below, at left, visiting with Mark Cunningham.  Gaucho Trivia:  Did you know that Mark Cunningham was drafted, er, recruited out of high school in Hawaii (Oahu) to play water polo at UCSB by then Coach Dante Dettamanti?  True story.  He was there for two years before transferring along with Coach Dante to some school further north called Stanford.  But Mark Cunningham is a Gaucho!  He would have to be, after all, given his world famous ocean skills...

Eldon Onsgard kicked ass in the age group paddleboard race, as usual

Kip Jerger is stoked!  Check that smile!

And one more heat of the men's open paddleboard race is underway...

And here comes the 2013 Men's Open Paddleboard Champion!.... LACo OL, Brian Murphy!

Retired Calif. State Beach Guard/Sports Producer, Chris Lincoln (Go Gauchos!) and his daughter, Kristen, who just graduated from UCSB (Go Gauchos!), who are at the event filming the Nationals for USLA

And just what kind of surf fins does Jimmy Makuta wear?!...

Beach Flags?!... did somebody say Beach Flags?!...  Get ready for the Men's and Women's OPEN Finals!...

And the Final Three are all from the same E. Coast Team!...  At right in this shot below is perennial favorite and National Champ, Brian Costello, who has the most amazingly fast start!  We're going to ask Jay Butki to describe and give a name to Costello's start.  Perhaps we will just call his start, "The Costello!"

The Final Showdown was over quick with Brian Costello up and in front of his teammate who conceded the victory within the first 10 yards

And now it is the Women's turn!...

And here now is the start of the Men's Open Surf Swim Final:

In the Men's Open Surf Swim Final, LACo OL, Chad Carvin, cruises to victory up the beach, easily outpacing the field in the swim

And here below is the start of the Women's Open Surf Swim Final!...
