Rookies in Venice...

SMS Tower #26

 Dateline: Saturday, June 22, 2013.

Re:  Beach Reconnaissance from SMS Tower #26 to Venice Pier, the Boardwalk, the Avenues and back...

Our mission late this morning into the early afternoon began at SMS Tower #26 at Ocean Park where we observed two brand spanking new rookies being trained by OLS Alex Vicente.  The rookies were Manuk and Katia.  With the inshore holes and a receding tide there were plenty of examples of rip currents and patrons struggling in the holes for Alex to point out to the rookies.

(At the bottom of the ramp, rescue can raised, OL Rookie In Training, Ekaterina "Katia" Shatalova)

We then walked down to Venice along the wet sand passing veteran LACo ocean lifeguards on duty and in the Avenues observed rookie candidates (from the 2nd pod) currently in training working the beach and watching the water with their yellow rescue cans and their navy blue bathing suits.

Watch out for stringrays...

Way to keep that Rescue Can up where it can be seen!...

We also hit up the boardwalk in Venice and had an amazing bowl of fresh fish, poke style, at POKE • POKE !  (fyi: it's about half way between Windward and Venice Blvd; and across from the Muscle Beach outdoor weightlifting area.)

"The Aloha Bowl"... Amazing and Fresh!...

Then we walked back to the Avenues from the south side of the Venice garage and saw OLS/Paramedic Josh Rosenstein leading infant cpr with the other half of the rookies who were testing in the garage while the balance of the class were on the sand...
