Huge Rip in Huntington Beach!

Heads up! Just in from retired LACo Recurrent Lifeguard, Mark Holtzman, who is now both a cameraman and airplane pilot.

Here is what Mark had to say about this Rip Current about a mile north of the Huntington Beach Pier, Sat., August 21, 2010: "Hi Will, Hope all is well. I found this rip today with a clockwise movement at the center. Never seen this before!! It was down in the Huntington Beach area. Talk with you soon, Mark"

And in a further update to this report this morning, Mark stated: "I fly a Cessna 206 and was flying down to San Diego yesterday (Saturday). I saw this rip about 2 miles north of the Huntington Beach Pier (just confirmed it on google earth) about 12:30pm. It did look like there was a good swell all the down to San Diego.

For example, Mark took a photo of SMN Tower #1550 earlier this summer and you can see Gabe Campos' custom built rope and stake perimeter system in place to allow emergency vehicle access to the tower.

Mark describes this photo on his blog as follows: "
Santa Monica Beach Lifeguard Tower 06/10/10 09:58
The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches & Harbors (along with the L.A. County Fire Dept's Lifeguard Division) is involved in a program where children have painted all 156 of the county's lifeguard towers. Having been a former beach lifeguard I spent many summers working in these and they were never much to look at until now. This one just north of the Santa Monica pier has fish painted on the roof. Now the lifeguard towers are much more colorful than all the umbrellas on the beach. It would be fun to see all of them."
