J.D. Moryl's Last Day !
Dateline, Los Angeles, Calif., August 31, 2008:
Rumor has it that today is Section Chief J.D. Moryl's last official day as a lifeguard!
In recognition thereof and on behalf of COUNTY RECURRENT News:
BEST WISHES to J.D. whose swan song is being played, instrumentals only, of course, today, along the beaches and canals of Venice, Calif, and nearby Culver City. LACO will never be the same.
CONGRATULATIONS, J.D., on your retirement and reinvigorated musical career !
Finally, for the man who declared he would never swim a lap again upon retirement, I look forward to seeing your increasing waist line !
Happy Trails,
Will Maguire

PLAYING CATCH-UP
Dateline: August 29, 2008
COUNTY RECURRENT is playing catch-up on a couple of items in this posting:
1. Above, Bruce Morgan receiving the LACOLA "Bronze Savage" award from LACOLA Past President, Capt. Erik Alberston, as a special presentation at the conclusion of the LACOLA General Meeting last nite, 08.28.08
2. Above, Bruce with Recurrent Rep. Arthur Verge (left) and Capt. Pat Jones (center) with Bruce hefting that 40 lb. beast, the "Bronze Savage". Bruce began his lifeguard career in 1975 and retired this past May 2008, during which time he worked in excess of 4,000 days "ON THE BEACH", on the front lines, principally in Central Section, making rescues and preventions and the rest that comes with the responsibilities of an L.A. County Ocean Lifeguard. When working on Santa Monica North, Bruce especially relished, as well as savored the additional role of playing the Goodwill Ambassador to the many tourists who frequent the beach just north of the Santa Monica Pier.
3. Below, is the Norton Wisdom painting, "dory-bottle-whale", which Norton painted in tribute for Jake at Jake's recent retirement party.

COUNTY RECURRENT asks: Are you "in the loop"?
I. DID YOU KNOW:
A. That WatchTheWater.org has a GREAT menu of Upcoming Events listed on its public website at:
https://watchthewater.org/events_calendar.cfm#727
note: to current/active lifeguards, be sure to log in from time to time at WatchTheWater.org to keep your status and email current with the Dept.
*** Head's Up to New Recruits ***
The Deadline for submitting an application for this September's Rookie Swim Test is August 29, 2008. Get the details at:
https://watchthewater.org/recruitment/
note: The Rookie-Recruit Swim Test is scheduled for: September 27, 2008.
B. that if you are Alumni, you have a terrific resource for alumni related events, email postings and a virtual potpourri of photos. If you are alumni, please contact Nick Steers (Ret. Captain, Zuma) at: nsteers@gmail.com
C. That the LACOLA website will keep you posted on recent lifeguards in the news, as well as other relevant information at:
http://www.lacola.org
If you have not seen it yet, you will want to 'click' on the link in the left hand menu bar on the homepage to "LACO Lifeguards in the News" to read about your lifeguard colleagues in action.
In addition, the same admonition applies to the LACOLA website as with WatchTheWater.org, e.g., active lifeguards (aka LACOLA Members) need to be registered so that they can access the member pages. As stated at lacola.org:
"LACOLA Members! Please read!
If you are a LACOLA member and you are viewing the website but have not registered, you are missing out on vital information. Half of the website is for members that have registered and LACOLA sends out information sometimes that is only sent via email or may be time sensitive in nature. If you have not registered you will not get this information!"
D. That Lifeguard Division publishes a great deal of information online at its own LIFEGUARD DIVISION website at:
http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/Lifeguards/Lifeguards.asp
(i) For example, if you have not seen the Dept's Photo Gallery, check it out at:
http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/Galleries/PhotoMiscGallery.asp
(ii) Also, check out the "Related Links" page at:
