Uncle Kipper NEEDS YOU !

Just in from Kip Jerger, LACo Veteran Recurrent Lifeguard:

From: kip jerger
Subject: Teaching the blind how to surf
Date: July 8, 2010
To: William Maguire

Kanoaaquatics is a non profit foundation that teaches over 200 inner city and abused kids how to surf yearly through the PS I love you foundation on Saturday, in Manhattan at sixth street from 10:00 am - 3:00 p.m., Saturday July 24th, 2010. Last year we taught over 100 children at Manhattan pier on the biggest south swell of the year. Waves were licking the bottom of the pier.

LACO lifeguard Kip Jerger, with 3 of his Kanoa surf camps instructors and equipment came up with a way to do it with many satisfied children surfers. Thanks to Lifeguard Jeff Horn, for helping Kanoa, and the back up. He and his wife Patti, and 200 volunteers donated their time and effort. Special thanks to the LACO Fire Department Beaches division Lifeguards for all their help. Only one rescue was made at the event that day. Yeh !

Volunteers welcome. Free food T-shirt and loads of fun. Contact Kip at 310-308-7264 or via email to: PSiloveyoufoundation@gmail.com

Kanoaaquatics has taught the Los Angeles Braille Institute children how to surf and boogie Board for the last 10 years. Some of the hardiest ones actually stand up and ride waves, all the way to shore. Wow what a sight ! This year we will be teaching the blind at 45th. St. in Manhattan Beach, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm., on Sat., July 24, 2010.

*** You do not have to know how to surf to help. Again Volunteers welcome. Contact Kip at 310-308-7264 if you are interested. Thank you.

Peace

A Chance For Children": FIRST CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Subject: FIRST CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS AND SAVE THE DATE!!!

A Chance for Children Foundation

From: Greg Bonann

Date: July 7, 2010

Re: Pool Volunteers for Summer Camp

Hi Everybody!!!! It is that time again!!!!! This year’s goal is “ONE ON ONE”… we did it last year, and I know we can do it again this year!! For every child, every day, ONE volunteer!!

Believe it or not, this will be our 18th annual weeklong summer camp.
We are so grateful for the continued support of each volunteer who has helped us over the years in keeping our dream alive - to reach out to homeless and ‘at risk’ youth. This years camp will take place August 9 - August 13. The thirty-five children attending the camp range in age from eight to twelve years old and will attend camp at no expense to their families.

In recent years many of you have assisted by donating your time teaching basic swimming skills to our youth - many of whom have never seen the ocean or a swimming pool. My hope this year, is that each of you may be able to find at least one afternoon to spend with the children.

Helping a child conquer their fear of the water and learn to swim offers each one a lifelong gift.
Everyone who has helped in the past knows the great reward of watching a child’s confidence grow over the course of the week as they become more comfortable in the water – like last year watching the kids who couldn’t swim on Monday jump off the high dive by Wednesday - AMAZING.

Please review the following “Pool Schedule”. If you are interested, email or call with the day(s) you will be able to participate. My email is MrMaliBone@aol.com or feel call my cell (310) 562-4769.

Summer Storm Warning!

(Note: L.A. Times, July 5, 2010, LATEXTRA section, featuring a great photo of a wave crashing at the Wedge in Newport Beach on Sunday, July 4th, 2010, revealing the truth of the New Zealand origin storm surf hitting our So. Calif. beaches since July 4th! x-ref: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/orange/la-me-waves-20100705,0,4865723.story

Cowabunga, dude!

H O L Y C O W !

Was that SOME SURF or WHAT !?...

The powers that be and prognosticators hit this one ON THE NOSE! This was a HUGE and POWERFUL storm from New Zealand which has, indeed, been crashing on our So. California south facing beaches since Sunday, July 4th! We are hoping to upload more photos, but we've got some photos taken by our "County Recurrent" Photography Unit... yesterday around 11 a.m. at Santa Monica South near Towers #26 - 28. These photos show our LACo beach guards hard at work making Preventions, setting up flags and signs, and even sweeping the ramp clear of sand so that no one slips while charging down the ramp on a rescue or prevent or the like.

We would especially like to add more photos of this storm so please send them on. You know that "County Recurrent" adamantly provides attribution and credit to the photographer. We insist upon it. You provide us a photo, YOU get the credit! Deal with it!

In any event, here goes. Sunday, July 5, 2010. Santa Monica South. 1100 hrs approximately:

SMS Tower #26, below

"Anatomy of a Prevent". This is HOW IT IS DONE! Rookies: Pay Attention! Watch how LACo OL Bill White descends the ramp at T-26, keeps his rescue can high for visibility and to alert the T-24 guard and T-28 guards, hoofs it to the location of the prevents and whistles the swimmers to get their attention. Four Preventions! Count em! With the depth of the inshore holes and the mean lateral current literally hoovering into the Rip at T-26, count these as FOUR lives saved! White was all over this like peanut butter on Wonder Bread!

Might as well add TWO More Prevents to Bill's tally because this surfer was attempting to surf along with his young son, in background in ankle deep water. Too Big and Too Rough for either of them.

Two shots below of the Rip at T-26 which is fed by the lateral current running along from Towers 28 and 27 leading any swimmers in those spots right into this Rip !

T-28 is in good hands below, with Chris Newman, on duty

As predicted, the lulls would last a few minutes between sets but when the sets of the storm surf rolled in the faces were 8 - 12 feet plus. I know because I had to haul a.. out through a four wave set with each succeeding wave bigger than the one before and breaking further out. The fourth wave had a wave face height of over 12 feet and this OL is glad, in fact, real glad that particular set had only 4 waves because the wave face height of that fourth wave was, in the words of ESPN's Stuart Scott,
R I D I C U L O U S !

Yep!... that's one of LACo's Baywatch Rescue Boats heading west toward the Santa Monica Pier in the next two photos, below

That's all we've got! Please send us some of your Surf Photos from this current storm so we can share them with our tribe of ocean warriors.

Until next time.....

"County Recurrent" News
applauds this weekly event which Murf is organizing and we especially think it is important for the younger guards to hone their paddleboard skills and to get connected to our ocean warrior tribe and to contribute to the camaraderie of our clan.

Per Murf: "We want to be as inclusive as possible to all lifeguards, regardless of area, section, or even agency. We try to present paddling as an easy way to get into the ocean when the surf is lackluster, and a swim is less than exciting. We also emphasize that spending more time in the water in a recreational setting ultimately behooves us in circumstances that are not recreational. Last, we hope this is a healthy way to include young lifeguards, who don't have the seniority to work regularly, thus missing out on the camaraderie we all appreciate so much."

Until next time.....
