CAR-MAGEDDON is upon us!

And so it has arrived. The weekend that may inundate Sunset Blvd. and PCH, etc. with increased vehicle traffic due to the closure of the 405 Fwy. between I10 Fwy and the 101 Fwy from late this evening of Friday, July 15th through Monday, July 18th at approx. 5 a.m. Per the Palisadian Post:

"All northbound lanes will be closed for 10 miles between the 10 Freeway and the 101 Freeway, and the southbound lanes will be closed for four miles between the 101 and Getty Center Drive during demolition of the southern half of the Mulholland Bridge."

Warm Water = Stingrays!

Time to do the stingray shuffle again, folks! Stingrays are back in force. Santa Monica South had 5 reported stingray punctures this past saturday, July 9th; and we had one at SMS #17 yesterday... when a tourist from Toronto, Canada stepped up gingerly to seek treatment. On a scale of 1 to 10, this tough Canadian told OLS Sean Lemm the pain was a 3. (With 10 being the pain Toronto hockey fans feel each year at another lost Stanley Cup opportunity...), but we digress.

The point is, shuffle your feet side to side and try to avoid normal forward stepping through the surf.

Thursday Evening Hermosa Paddle Session, July 7, 2011

If you haven't heard about the summer Thursday evening paddle sessions at Hermosa Pier hosted by LACo OL, Mike Murphy, well listen up. First of all, this is not for the novice paddler. These guys and gals paddle out multiple times past the end of the Hermosa Pier. The first go out was at least a half mile straight out past the foot of the pier! Impressive to say the least. That said, check out these photos and links to videos we've uploaded on YouTube and you will see that this is a group serious about fitness AND fun!

LACo Training Center Presents: Blood & Pizza

This blog post shall focus on the Southern Section based, LACo Training Center sponsored Blood Drive earlier this afternoon, Thursday, July 7th, 2011, organized and produced by Section Chief Garth Canning that was promoted, communicated and trumpeted to as many lifeguards, family and friends as possible. In connection therewith, let's first applaud such inclusiveness, not to mention the volunteerism to a worthy annual cause championed by LACOLA. Kudos all around to Chief Canning and his staff for all their hard work and for broadly communicating this event.

Finally, there was as promised a boatload of PIZZA, beverages, snacks and cookies to replenish the blood sugar levels of those lifeguards whose veins were tapped and from whom blood was drawn! So here goes...

This was a well attended event during the time we were there late this afternoon and we even saw LACo Capt. Steve Gregg (Retired) there donating blood and enjoying a slice of pizza afterwards. 10-4 to this Stud LACo Lifeguard Alumnus!

Hi Will

Here are some pics from the Redondo Beach on the July 4th.

We were working Ruby tower (adjacent to the pier) in RCO with fellow lifeguard recurrent Zara Shahalayi and OLS Brian Carey.

Its like the summer skipped the year 2010, but this year we saw it return in force. As Southern Guards we just wanted to let some our colleagues in the Northern and Central section know that we held our ground in the southern front. Here are a few photos of 4th of July in Redondo Beach (RCO next to Redondo Beach Pier). These pics were taken in the few moments we were able to return to our tower, most of our shifts were spent on foot patrol, our tower alone had 8 lost kids but all towers were holding all day. Free Redondo sand for the guard who spots any in photo 2.
