Hope you are doing well. Can you add a post sometime soon about the Jimmy Miller Foundation Ocean Therapy program. We are looking for volunteers for all of our summer sessions. See below and feel free to edit.

Hey Fellow Lifeguards,

As some of you know the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation (JMMF) is doing some amazing stuff in our community with kids and with active and veteran wounded military personnel helping them heal from physical and mental illness and injury through surfing and ocean related activities. Many of you knew, worked with and competed with my brother Jimmy and many of you have helped us out or participated in one of our great events over the last five years. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Our organization is based on volunteers donating a few hours of their time to help someone learn how to surf and the participants and volunteers leave every session with a smile.

I am writing this email hoping to get on your calendars for one day this summer to help out some great people. Events take place at Rosecrans Ave in Manhattan Beach and also down at DMJs on the Camp Pendleton Base in Oceanside where you can surf and we score some great waves. Times are 9am to about 1pm and the days down at Camp Pendleton a bit longer with travel time and surfing/beers after and after.

Below are the scheduled Rosecrans dates and the not 100% confirmed Wounded Warrior Camp Pendleton dates. You can learn a lot more, see some great videos, see what you will be doing and get on our email list at www.jimmymillerfoundation.org. A couple of hours of your time is more valuable to us and to the participants than anything else. Please take a look and your calendars and I hope you can carve out a few hours for a great cause.

To sign up for an ocean therapy session please either email me or Mark Gerold (mark@jimmymillerfoundation.org) back with the dates that you will be able to help out. Feel free to pass this on to anyone in SoCal who may be interested. We would be stoked to get San Diego and Orange County support especially for the Camp Pendleton dates.

Paddle Racing Returns to Historic Santa Monica Pier

Presented by HONOLUA SURF CO.

Benefiting HEAL THE BAY

Restoring a decades-old tradition, the world famous Santa Monica Pier and the Honolua Surf Co. will kick off the summer of 2010 with the Santa Monica Pier Paddleboard Race, a dory competition and a paddle gear exhibition, on Saturday, June 12, 2010.

“Santa Monica and the pier in particular have a rich history of paddleboarding and we’re thrilled to be bringing back that tradition and tapping into the growing popularity of stand up paddling,” said Pat Fraley, brand manager at Honolua Surf Co. which is presenting the event. “This will be a great day at the beach and the pier for anyone who enjoys the ocean or a good competition.”

Paddleboard racing was a popular Santa Monica sport in the 1940s with two paddleboard clubs headquartered on the pier and race results regularly published in the local newspaper. The sport’s popularity waned over the decades, but has recently made a dramatic resurgence.

Santa Monica-based Heal the Bay and its public marine education facility, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, will receive a portion of gross proceeds from the paddleboard race.

"Heal the Bay is excited to be a part of this wonderful ocean event. Not only will a portion of the proceeds support our efforts to make Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, safe, healthy and clean, but it also promotes greater awareness of, and deeper connections with, the Santa Monica Bay," said Natalie Burdick, Heal the Bay’s constituent development manager.

The start and finish of the races will take place on the sand immediately adjacent to the pier with the course running north and south in the heart of the Santa Monica Bay.

The stand up paddle and prone paddleboard races feature 5.5 mile and 1 mile courses, both of which take paddlers by the historic Santa Monica Pier, visited by an estimated 4 million people each year.

“The pier is a world-class venue for an ocean event and restoring the paddleboard tradition to Santa Monica is awesome,” said Todd Roberts of ZJ Boarding House, which is helping to organize the event. “We are expecting everyone from some serious competitors to first-time racers who are just out to have fun and be a part of fantastic day at the beach.”

For the dory competition, area lifeguards will row fiberglass rescue boats in both a 1 mile sprint and a crowd-pleasing 3 lap race through the surf zone.

On the pier deck, manufacturers will show off the latest in paddleboards, accessories and clothing. An awards ceremony will follow the completion of the races for the top finishers in each of the divisions.

The race begins at Driftwood on the Marina Peninsula south of the Venice Pier so the first view you will have is of the pier as you begin the race running... Hopefully, there will be some surf like shown in this photo below by Nathalie Brouwer from July 2009.


After returning to the beach after swimming around the Venice Pier you will be running toward the Venice HQ Garage and Division HQ!... so look your best!

Finally, you are getting close to the Finish. Below you will recognize Will Rogers Tower #18. You've only to run to WRHQ, swim around the WRHQ Buoy and then run up to Will Rogers Tower #5!



Once you see Will Rogers HQ you will be closing in on the Finish and your donut!


Heads up! Be careful because the first storm drain you come across is Will Rogers Tower #8, in the photo below, and is NOT the Finish Line... but you can see it from there. You are almost done!


You can probably taste that donut right now because you can now definitely see the Finish Line at Will Rogers #5, but you must still run past Towers #7 and #6...

"Dory Men and Dory Women,

Your attention PLEASE...

A Pete Peterson, all wood, non-self bailer Dory, recently restored by vintage Dory men, Randy Steigley, Tom Snyder and Harold Dunnigan and most ably assisted by the generosity of Scott Hubbell is looking for a suitable site at which to have it displayed. At present it is sequestered, in safe storage, on the Santa Monica Pier. Hopes had been that the City would create a museum at the Pier's end but funding just was not to be had... so, we need a place that is safe, secure and available for public viewing and we're looking for help.

A brief sketch of Pete Peterson tells of his all-round Ocean Aquatic Skills, you name it, he could do it. A Santa Monica Lifeguard Lieutenant, movie stunt man, diver, skilled Dory man. Maker of Dorys, in the days of wood/plywood, and paddleboards, one of which is presently being restored.... plus, the original designer of the Lifeguard Rescue Tube, from its original black inflated model to the current sponge rubber configuration... So the likes of those mentioned above are in pursuit of a site, hopefully in the Santa Monica, South Bay area that will preserve the memory of this talented Waterman of the past.
