Pete Stange: Rest In Peace

We recently read of the passing of L.A. City ocean lifeguard legend, Pete Stange.

And today we were requested to post an obituary for Pete by his son, Jon, as follows: Hello William, a paddle boarding friend of mine had forwarded me your website to see if I wanted to post an announcement about my father’s passing on Tuesday October 5th, he was 90 years old. His name is Peter James Stange, he was an LA City lifeguard as far back as I can remember, a 1956 Olympic waterpolo athlete, father, grandfather and recently a great grandfather. He was married to Louise Stange, who passed on November 1st 2019. He was a true waterman, not only a lifeguard and waterpolo player but an avid free diver, fisherman, swimmer. He and his wife bought property in Malibu back when an ocean view lot went for $3K! They raised 3 boys, Bill, Bob and myself Jon. My dad and his brother Mike Stange were well known in the lifeguarding area. Anyway, if you can post an obituary on your website that would be great. Thank you, Jon Stange. A. City Lifeguard Pete Stange passed away last night at the age of 90 years. Pete is the older brother of Mike Stange. Mike is also a retired LACO Lifeguard. Pete played water polo in the 1951 Pan American Games and in the Helsinki Olympics. We have lost another great waterman. Lifeguard Rookie Test 2021

Dateline: Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Dockweiler State Beach. 300 candidates showed up today for two events, namely, (1) 1,000 meter ocean swim; followed by (2) a run-swim-run. Here are photos and a couple of videos of today's event.
