The Snowy Plover Run-Swim-Run: Amended, Edited and Reshaped

Dateline: Sat., Sept, 21, 2013

The previously contemplated run-swim-run workout is being edited and reshaped.  It has been brought to my attention that a few concerned citizens in the past several days have expressed concern that the contemplated workout would adversely impact the snowy plovers inside the Snowy Plover Protection Area (SPPA), even though the contemplated courses were outside of the SPPA and in areas on the beach open to the public.

Nevertheless, in an effort to mitigate the concerns expressed, I have deleted the previously posted photo, the contemplated workout courses, and the posted schematic.

A new course will be set up in a public area on the beach and away from the Snowy Plover Protection Area on the beach in Santa Monica.  I may even set up the workout outside the City of Santa Monica.

I am retaining the name, "The Snowy Plover Run-Swim-Run", however.

For the record, we know of no one who even participated in the originally contemplated workout previously posted.

Until next time.....

Venice South Shout Out!

Thursday, late a.m., Sept. 19th, 2013... the view from Division...

and the close up/zoomed image of same...

Ave-26:

In the late 70's, Veteran OL, Bruce Morgan (Ret.), told us recently of a day when a kid went over the falls and hit his head and when Bruce picked him up he was limp in his arms. At the time, protocol was for slight traction to be applied when managing a suspected head injury.  Lt. Dick Heineman was second on scene and was handling and maintaining the kids legs.  Momentarily after they got the kid on the sand on his back, Bruce exerted slight traction whereupon the kid regained consciousness and wanted to get up and get out of there and, in unison, both Bruce and Dick said to the kid,  "Don't move!"...    Paramedics arrived thereafter and transported the kid to the hospital where Lt. Heineman learned later in the day and confirmed to Bruce that the kid had, indeed, broken C-1 in his neck.  The kid was aok and was not paralyzed thanks to the swift actions of Bruce, Dick and the rest of the lifeguard backup, paramedics, and hospital staff.

And just in from Bruce, his further recollections of this event that day:

"Very good memory and good write up. This even had to be as early as 1976 or 1977 in the June months. I do not know if we still have log books for that.

Here are some extra details:

1- The stiff collars at the time were not very adequate and were not secured by Velcro.

2- The kid was around 17 years old, tall and was bereft of all and I mean all mobility --- how else could you have got ---

3- Lt Heineman to be excited or impressed. He was a pro at treating everything as if it was in his text book and that nothing was new. But I could tell when he called me from headquarters, as I listened at the Ave-26 phone, that Lt Heineman was impressed and glad about how this one turned out.

10-4 Cheers
Bruce

*** Many Thanks to Bruce for sharing his recollections of this great save at Ave-26 "back in the day".

DANGER RIP TIDES!...

RIP TIDES ?!...  Bring em on!  We whistle and/or otherwise direct swimmers, body boarders, etc. away from them and for those that get swept into them, well, we go get em!  As beach lifeguards, that's what we do!

HEAT WAVE! It's HOT HOT HOT!...

Do NOT put away the umbrellas, hats, sunscreen YET!...

The UV Index is apparently MAXED OUT through the entire approaching weekend.

Sun Sun Sun Sun.....

Triple digits in the inland valleys... means people will be escaping to the beach again this weekend.

NBCLA is also reporting that it will be ANOTHER SCORCHER this weekend:

     http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Southern-California-Weather-Heat-Humidity-222509151.html

with HEAT and HUMIDITY (aka,  HUMI  DIDDY!)

It could be LABOR DAY WEEKEND, The Sequel, the weekend after.  Deja vu all over again!

Bring plenty of water to drink, even an ice chest with a bandanna tossed in to wrap around your neck would be a good idea for any lifeguard working the beach over the next four days...

Wear a wide brimmed hat like veteran LACo OL, Ron Pearlman, does.  Apply sunscreen liberally. Grab shade when you can.  Avoid that scorching hot soft sand too!  Wear your sandals if you have too.

Santa Monica North

Stay cool!
