"Get In Shape Now, Ask Burnside How!..."

With LACo Recurrent Lifeguard Rechecks coming up in June and just a bit over a month away, we decided to ask Retired LACo Lifeguard Chief, Bob Burnside, on what he recommends for the recurrent to get in shape for the recheck and the summer. We include a photo of the beautiful public 50 meter swimming pool where Bob trains at in Palm Desert where he and his wife have a home. Having just finished a 2,500 meter swim recently, Bob posted this beautiful photo of this magnificent pool.



In any case, here goes:


"Get In Shape Now, Ask Burnside How!...", by Bob Burnside

"Happy to make s few comments. Get ready for the recheck...but more important get yourself in good shape. This requires more than a easy 2000 meter pool swim... "Put some wind sprints into the pool workout... by incorporating at the end of it at least 10 50 meter sprints...with no more than a 15 second rest between them... Swim these with your head above water, as if looking for your victim...That should be done 5 days a week.

Now that you are ocean training...consider a 1000 meter swim... AND then on completion... do 10 sprints from the beach... out beyond the surf line... FULL OUT! You owe all of this to yourself... but more important to those that you are protecting... And please.. NO moaning about the water temp! OR any other adverse weather condition... JUST DO IT!

You have a great job,a super salary, work conditions outstanding... and sharing it all with your many friends... That demands your best effort. Age is not a factor!!... If you're thinking that way...Gracefully retire. Have a successful and great summer... miss ya all!    Bob

FYI. Per the City of Malibu website:

Skylar Peak, John Sibert and Joan House won three seats on the Malibu City Council Tuesday, according to preliminary election results.

Peak took a large lead in the count of all seven precincts and vote by mail ballots with 1,466 votes, followed by Sibert with 1,156 and House with 1,037 votes.

Now, I wish I had taken that picture of Peak and pals waving to cars yesterday at the intersection of PCH and Webb Way!

This is a reminder about the upcoming Spring CSLSA Board of Directors Meeting on April 12-13, hosted by the HBSLSA in Huntington Beach.

C4 Waterman and the USLA Join Forces

HONOLULU (April 9, 2012) - The United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) has exclusively designated the C4 Waterman iRescue Board as the official rescue board of the USLA and the C4 Waterman iRescue Sled as the official rescue sled of the USLA. The endorsement sheds light on the newest rescue technology available in the United States.

"C4's inflatable products are the cutting edge in lifesaving, offering an enhanced level of performance that was unavailable until now," said B. Chris Brewster, President of the USLA. "They're light, tough, and transportable, a real innovation."

Veteran watermen and Hawaii ocean lifeguards Archie Kalepa and Brian Keaulana innovated and designed the range. Together they built and tested each model to make sure it meets the needs of the rescuer and the rescued.

"The best thing about these products is not the longevity or the storage benefits, but the technology," says Kalepa, who has been an active part of C4 Waterman since 2006. "C4`s Rigid AirCore technology means that our equipment can go where hard boards cannot, which ultimately makes them safer for both the lifeguard and the victim."

C4 Waterman's iRESCUE products do not use regular fiberglass construction, EVA foam or epoxy composite layups commonly employed today. Instead they use C4's Rigid AirCore Technology, making them tough and unbreakable tools, capable of performing well and surviving heavy situations without damage.

Retired L.A. City and LACo Beach Lifeguard, Tim McNulty, Sr., recalled Larry as follows recently:

Back in the day Larry was a L.A. City ocean lifeguard. He was a true visionary and considered the father of skateboarding. He even attempted to sail around the world alone. Larry was one the nicest guys I've ever been around.
