Stunning Morning Along Santa Monica South: The Video

Below, OLS Alex Vicente back at SMS Tower #26...

It looked like some fun, albeit smallish, NW wind swell for the surfers and body boarders... and a fairly strong lateral current heading toward Venice... which the undersigned took advantage of in a swim from SMS Tower #26 to Tower #28.....

And then we headed back toward the Santa Monica Pier... stopping at SMS Tower #20 along the way to say hello to OL Brandon Henry Snell...

Surf Trip to California in a 1960 Studebaker!...

Dateline: Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 at Will Rogers State Beach at Tower #15... shortly after I arrived at Tower #15 an hour early at 10 a.m. to take an off duty swim, a couple of young surfers arrived and set their boards down on the berm along with an ice cooler and beach towels.....  it turns out that these two young dudes were surfing ALL DAY!... with some breaks for cokes and sandwiches in between..... How do I know?  Because as I got to my car just after I got off duty at 7 pm, there they were tying their boards to the roof of their 1960 Studebaker!!! with Oregon plates!!!

Tris and Kaleb were their names and they were from Klamath Falls, Oregon!... and they had hit the road a week or so earlier bound for So. California to surf!  The Studebaker was solid underneath the hood with Tris explaining that he had rebuilt it all and it was "good to go!"...  It was a classic vehicle with its original interior, as well as it's, albeit faded, original exterior paint. These guys were also sleeping in it at night.  Definitely, a great surf trip and memory for these young lads.

I took a few photos and a video of their car with their consent and here they are for your enjoyment.

I sure hope to see them again on their next surf trip so we can point them to some other SoCal surf spots!... I also told them that they were smart to take this surf trip together at their age and they smiled and said that back home their family was not so happy about So Cal. surf trip!... Classic!  :-)

As I pulled away and they finishing up securing their board to the roof of their car, I yelled to them, "Happy Trails!".....  (although I was left with the impression that they may not have heard that expression before...)

Central Section Recurrent Sauna & Jacuzzi...

Dateline: Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016... just past 12 noon, we notice for the first time that the framing has gone up on the much talked about and much delayed "Recurrent Sauna & Jacuzzi" out front of Santa Monica Lifeguard Headquarters that has been just a concrete slab since at least June 2016 and perhaps earlier.....

Shown here for the first time are photos and a sneak peek video inside the soon to be opened "Recurrent Sauna & Jacuzzi"... at least that is what one Veteran LACFD Lifeguard Captain told us when we asked him about the concrete slab this past June 2016...

Boat Warning At Will Rogers Tower #15...

Dateline: Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016 at Will Rogers State Beach at Tower #15 at approximately 5:40 pm... after I had spent over an hour unsuccessfully trying to dig out the mystery boat line approximately 100 feet south of the jetty at WRHQ... the on duty lifeguard at Tower #15, Wadley, was on a foot patrol and noticed a small fishing boat drifting in too close to shore.....  this occurred just after I had thrown in the towel, as it were, on the failed mission to unearth said mystery line... though OLS Pat O'Neil thinks it could be one of the Will Rogers workout buoy set ups with a 20 lb anchor.....  either that or a lobster trap... according to OL Jeff McConnel (Ret.).....

In any case, while Wadley was signaling and whistling to the boat to move toward open sea, I trotted over to Tower #15 and asked for the area vehicle to assist in hailing said vessel...... and then I went back to the shore line to try to get the boat's attention as well... along with my camera....  here are the photos and the video to show for it.....

Boat Warning At Will Rogers Tower #15: The Video

     https://youtu.be/cb8PbOxM1uE

After grabbing my gear inside WRHQ, I noticed that one of the Baywatch rescue boats had approached the small fishing boat... We would love to hear the explanation for the fishing boat reversing its way out to sea with the bow line and anchor in tow!?...   :-)

The fishing boat must have been o.k., however, because as the next photo shows... Baywatch heads toward MDR at a fast clip...

Nautical Mystery At Will Rogers!...

Dateline: Saturday late afternoon, Oct. 1, 2016... approximately 100 feet south of the jetty at WRHQ at or about the zero tide line... we encountered a boat line securing "something" under the sand that we could not pull from the grasp of the sea!...  There was a loop in the line and it appears to have once served some nautical purpose, albeit unknown to the undersigned...  On a second foot patrol to the unknown mystery boat line loop we took a couple of photos of it so that our nautical savvy audience could opine as to what it could possibly be...

The Photos:

Anybody recognize these nautical boat lines?...

We are thinking of performing an off duty dig at approx. 1700 hrs this afternoon, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016 to see if we can unearth what is being held by the powers that be at the bottom of the sea...
