North By Northeast... Off shore and blown away on Santa Monica South

Dateline: Late morning, Friday, April 15, 2016... our arrival at approximately 10:30 a.m. at CSHQ gave us an opportunity to witness the powerful winds out of the northeast that were blowing the palm trees and sending sand across the beach and out into the ocean...  Here are the photos to prove it...

Check out the flattened sand, the wind blowing across the sand and the off shore effects on the surf!...

One trash can got blown out to sea.... literally and so Bill rescued it and carried it back on shore.  Who knew you could bring in the trash?...

And as it happens, Bill was on a mission to deliver time cards to CSHQ and offered me a ride back which I happily agreed to, esp. seeing as how the wind was blowing sand in my face...

On our way toward CSHQ we stopped and said hi to OL John Nugent at SMS Tower #20 and collected his time card for delivery to CSHQ...

Santa Monica South: Off Duty Foot Patrol...

Dateline: Thursday, April 14, 2016, mid morning reconnaissance from CSHQ to SMS Tower #28 and back...

We begin with a photo of the Rip current with no one in it... off of SMS Tower #18...

Trademark Alert!...  BLUE SUEDE SHOES® sandal (x-ref: lost and found), along with a couple of choice plastic toy tools...

Bee playing cards... left in the sand overnite...

I just wish these people would Bee more careful and pick up their cards before leaving the beach...

And look who is working SMS Tower #20 (below) and looking fit as a fiddle!...  Veteran OL, George Akopyan!... (aka, The Mayor of Ave 23)...  who advised us that he has, ironically, been working more shifts lately in Santa Monica than in Venice.

That gnarly Inshore Hole (below) we wrote about a month ago off of SMS Tower #24 is still there and it is still a monster!

Not to worry, OLS Mike Murphy is all over it and all of SMS at the main tower, T-26.  (Sidebar: Yes, those are HOBIE® sunglasses he is wearing).

On our return trip to CSHQ, we caught up with OL George Akopyan again putting in some laps in the soft sand!...

Back at CSHQ, we observe a construction crew working out in front having set a foundation and framing and pouring concrete!...  What could it be?!...

We then saw an area Captain and asked him what all the construction was all about and he said, "Oh, that's the new recurrent sauna, jacuzzi and weight training center".  Wow!...  Who Knew?!...

And then we saw another Captain readying his vehicle and on his way out of the parking lot.  Eugene!...

Pop Quiz!... Who do these fins (DA FIN) belong to on the rack of Rescue 200 ?

And the Answer is...

And then it was time to leave... or maybe not!...

Fog Bank Open!...

Dateline: Tuesday morning, April 5, 2016.... upon our arrival at CSHQ around 0900 hrs, the sun was shining and the skies were blue...  within minutes of our foot patrol (off duty) at SMS Tower #20, the fog started to roll in AND it did not waste any time.....  See for yourself!

High tide washing over the berm between Towers 18 and 20...

Miniature Plastic Red Cup snagged with a broken arrow found in the sand!... True story!

Below, OLS Alex Vicente on patrol at SMS Tower #20... note the Santa Monica Pier as visible in the background!

Moments and I mean MOMENTS later the pier disappeared!  See for yourself below!...  "What Pier?!"...

Meanwhile out front of Tower #20 (aka, Bay St.), there are still plenty of tasty waves being caught and the sun is still shining...

Time out...

p.s. and if you were wondering how far the fog got on its way inland, here is a shot taken at approx. 10:30 a.m. up on Wilshire and 4th St. showing the fog wrapping around the tall building at the corner of Ocean Ave. and Wilshire Blvd.  Just sayin'...

Anatomy Of A Prevent!...

Dateline: Mid morning, Friday, April 1st, 2016... along Santa Monica North just west of SMN Tower #15... as observed from Tower #14.....  This prevention sequence began with the lifeguard at SMN Tower #15 approaching on foot in the direction of the two swimmers to call their attention to their position in the water and to make a couple of preventions hopefully...  Simultaneously, the area vehicle was on patrol and observed both the guard and the two swimmers and used the p.a. system to gain the two swimmers attention.

Close up/Screen shot below of above photo shows how far out these two teenaged female swimmers were... at shoulder level with the visible approaching rip...
