The 2013 LACoFD Ocean Lifeguard Candidate Swim, aka "Rookie Swim 2013"

Saturday morning, Oct. 12, 2013 around 8 a.m.,  the candidates remaining in line to check in at CSHQ in Santa Monica.  The goal:  to make it to the second round, e.g., the oral interview, by finishing in the Top 65 in the day's swim test... a half mile swim!

And the Top 65 finishers gather in the garage at CSHQ to listen to Capt. Eugene Atanasio inform them of the next things to come for them that day, including the oral interview at the Training Center in Manhattan Beach...

Congratulations to the Top 65 Finishers!  This year's Top 65 included several candidates who finished out of the money last year, so for them this has been a year of greater preparation which resulted in success this time out.  For those who did not make it, you are welcomed back. Do what you have to do to get in tip top shape.

And last but certainly not least, this year's rookie swim was perhaps the best organized and most efficiently run rookie swim in recent memory. A tremendous team effort by both permanent and recurrent personnel, all led by the Training Center staff.  Well done!

"Salvavidas Cubanos - Saving Lives"

Just in from Veteran OL Tony Whitmore:

Re: "Salvavidas Cubanos - Saving Lives"

I have created a charitable project called, "Salvavidas Cuba - Saving Lives", and I'm working in conjunction with the International Life Saving Federation.  ILSF is the organization behind the extremely successful, Project Ecuador.   I am going to La Habana, Cuba, November 9th through 15th to distribute donated Lifeguard uniforms to Las Salvavidas Cubanos.  The purpose of this trip is to distribute 25 complete uniforms; ie, shirts and trunks to the Lifeguards.  If you would like to participate, please stop by CSHQ and drop off your gently used trunks, shirts, and hats in the box labeled, "Salvavidas Cuba - Saving Lives".

My next trip will be in December when I will be distributing rescue cans that ILSF will purchase with money you can donate to the International Life Saving Federation.

Thank you for your consideration.

If you have any questions, please contact me at my email address:  tony.whitmore@gmail.com

Respectfully,

Tony

Sunday Afternoon Zero Tide...

Summer beach weather!  Warm. Really warm. Gorgeous blue skies...

We took a walk from SMS to the Venice Pier and back along the Venice boardwalk late this afternoon just shy of the Zero Tide (0.0) at 4:58 pm.

We finished up at SMS Tower #26, took a buoy swim and according to OLS, Pat O'Neill, the water temp was 68 degrees!  And we believe it!  No chill at all.

We hope you enjoy the photos we took along the way.
