As most LACo Recurrents now know, it is time once again to elect our LACOLA Recurrent Representatives for the next term.  Sample Ballots have been mailed out and we received ours this past Friday, August 3rd.  Actual voting is taking place online at www.lacola.org and began on August 5th and will conclude at midnight on August 15, 2012.

Paper Mail Ballots can be requested as set forth on the Sample Ballot if you are unable to vote online.

Your Vote Counts !  To help promote this Election and to get the word out to as many Recurrents as possible, we have put all the names of the candidates down on a piece of paper and put them in our hat (aka, Hat Lottery) and drawn the names out one at a time and we present them here as follows (as per this random and inclusive lottery, see photo above of our hat on our desk... woo hoo!):

Las Tunas Tower Vandalized !

The LACo Lifeguard Tower at Las Tunas on PCH in Malibu was vandalized this past Friday night, Aug. 3, 2012 and was first reported by the LACo OL who arrived for duty on Saturday morning, August 4th, 2012.  The photos shown here were taken Sunday morning upon my arrival for duty at Las Tunas at 1100 hrs.  Will Rogers Lifeguard Capt. Robert Torres arrived soon thereafter to inspect the damage and to take photos of the damage to the tower. And remarkably, repairs were already underway as of 0930 hrs this morning per Media Guru Adam Sandler's assistant who saw the Beaches & Harbors crew working on the LT Tower on her commute to work   *** Thankfully, entry was not gained inside the tower by the vandals and all contents and supplies inside the tower were still intact.

LACo Central Section A Team Wins the 2012 Taplin Relay !

Dateline: Saturday Night, August 4, 2012.  Hermosa Beach, California.

 The Central Section LACo A Team Won the 2012 Taplin Relay by a large margin after the stellar swimmers (Chad Carvin, Kicker Vencill, Juan Delgadillo and Sean Lemm) created an insurmountable lead at the outset.

VENICE Wins The 2012 Bud Stevenson Intracrew Medley Relay!

Dateline:  Friday Nite... late, August 3, 2012,  Hermosa Beach Pier, northside

The team from VENICE won the Intercrew relay this year.  Do have to wonder about the hilarious diagonal course (on a heading for, near as we could collectively tell, was the Charthouse... at Topanga!...) one of their dory teams rowed, though, which left some of us scratching our heads...   :-)   A broken oar lock on another leg... leading to lots of drama there near the end with the Zuma team's dory right on the heels, er, stern of the final Venice dory team, and esp. after the Venice swimmers totally crushed the field creating a huge lead at the outset...

Well, here are some photos. Some good, some fun, some not so good due to the limitations of our blog's camera equipment and yet all of these photos capture the spirit of this fantastic event and every effort is made to push this content out to our readership as quickly as possible in our continuing effort to be as inclusive as possible.  Enjoy!...

2012 Wieland Shield Team Rosters & Photos

The Aussies are in town and they want to take the Shield home with them... again!  No way!  Supervisor Don Knabe does not want that to happen!  In fact, the Aussies were encouraged to eat and drink as much as possible at last nite's Medal of Valor Dinner which the Aussies attended as guests.

We've been provided, albeit very late, the schedule of the Shield competition events taking place today and tomorrow.  We also just got the roster of the teams late last nite.

We wish the Aussies a great trip and good luck in the competitions but not that much good luck...

2012 CSLSA Regionals Report, by Adam Sandler

In an exclusive report with "County Recurrent", Media Dude/Paddler/Lifeguard, Adam Sandler, reports as follows:

A big "Well Done" should go out to the LACoLA Surf Racing Team (SRT) for its decisive win of the California Surf Lifesaving Championships last Saturday in Newport Beach. The LACoLA Team scored a whopping 894.05 points overall, while the second place agency, California State Parks scored 313.81. Big individual winners included Taylor Spivey, who was the Women's points leader with 82. Taylor also finished first in 8 events, the most of any competitor.  Tandis Morgan, who also won this year's Ironwoman title, was second with 73 points.

Marine Firefighting Instructor and Baywatch relief Captain/Paramedic Rob Pelkey won top honors among the men with 53 points and 4 first places finishes, the most of any male competitor. He was also was the Ironman this year, a title typically held by Brian Murphy, but Brian was in Hawaii competing in the Molokai to Oahu 32 mile paddle. (Alison Riddle and Mike Murphy also tackled the paddle in the stock SUP).

The Lifesaving Victoria team visiting LA to compete in the Wieland Shield contest on Friday and Saturday (Aug. 3rd & 4th), showed their considerable surf racing mettle by taking first place in a number of events. However, their firsts were not officially scored, and the second place finisher was awarded the first place points.  David Cartlidge and Tom Seth won the three lap surfboat race. And our friend, Eldin Onsgard competed in every event, and was likely the oldest competitor at the Regionals. Eldin also was the 60-64 age group Ironman.

Though Newport is known for its balmy ocean temperature running in the upper '60s to low '70s in the summer, the water temperature was a chilly 59/60 degrees thanks to a howling wind the night before and an upwelling of cold water.


The day before on Friday, the CSLSA Junior Guard Championships was a sight to behold with over 2,500 people crowding the sand and hard pack. It was awesome to see the kids, from ages 9-17, compete with such enthusiasm which was matched by the cheering parents and friends. As a paddler, it's also a hoot to see the younger kids grab a rescue board and paddle with such aplomb. And some of the kids in the AA group (16-17) were as good as the adult guards.

A Shout Out should go to CSLSA JG co-chairs and LACoLA OL's Reenie Boyer and Lori Walton for doing such a good job organizing it all.

The event nabbed a good amount of coverage on Fri. and Sat; The OC Register, Daily Breeze, Daily Pilot, Long Beach Press Telegram and LA Times all did stories and/or photos. Plus, several of the AOL Patch's like the Newport Beach Patch and Belmont Shore did postings both days. Plus, most of the TV Channels were there. Fox 11 flew over at the start of JGs and did a live "hover" report, and ABC-7 hit the sand and spoke with Jay Butki and some kids. This week, Pelkey was profiled in the OC Register, and in today’s The Beach Reporter Cartlidge and Spivey are profiled.

Also, a film crew from the Weather Channel show “Lifeguard!” was on hand capturing the action for a future episode.

The SRT heads to Cape May, NJ next week Aug. 8-11, for the USLA National Competition.
